The Story
Crossing Guard, a non-human entity, is sent to earth to transport six-year-old Patrice to the afterlife when she dies, set to happen the next day. His reward for a successful transition? To be conceived as a human. But if Crossing fails, he will explode.
Patrice's father, Keyvon Johnson, is a Los Angeles architect and beekeeper. He teaches his daughter the African philosophy of ubuntu-that humans are interconnected. When we hurt one, we hurt all. When we raise one, we raise all. Then he learns his daughter might die. Only one person will help him save his child-a heart transplant recipient, Charlene Stine.
A mom and small business owner, Charlene wants to pay kindness forward. But transplant medications make her brain foggy. She inadvertently helps both Crossing and Keyvon-which endangers her own life. She attempts to save Keyvon's daughter-and protect her own family-but can she do it without her new heart being rejected by her body?
