The Story

The Rodriguez Family lived a life of wealth and luxury until January 1959 when Fidel's boisterous and celebratory caravan traveled through Cuba declaring the success of his Revolution.

In the years to come life changed significantly, from the reframing of citizen rights to the rule of law. In fear for their daughters' futures, Alejandro and Sarita Rodriguez leave Cienfuegos against their extended family's wishes. In Cuba all who left were called gusanos and labelled betrayers of the Revolution. Once on US soil they are labelled yet again, this time as political refugees.

From their arrival in Miami, Florida to their eventual move to Denver, Colorado, this story weaves themes of displacement, family bonds, and the indominable human spirit. The Girls from Cienfuegos shows the survival of the family in which love and memory sustain them when everything else is stripped away.
